What do you need to know about your health insurance options?
New York State of Health
In past years, unemployed or low-income New Yorkers often could not acquire health insurance because it cost too much. However, if you’re a New York State resident today, you’re now automatically qualified for a health insurance plan through the New York State of Health. Whether you’re in your early 20’s or approaching retirement age, there are many options available to individuals in need of health coverage, all with different pricing brackets and benefits.
With the Essential Plan, there is no deductible and the monthly premium is $20 per person or $0, depending on income. Individuals eligible for this plan are those who meet certain income requirements, are not eligible for Medicaid or Child Health Plus, and are not eligible for employer coverage. The Essential Plan covers all basic care services, including preventative care, inpatient care, maternity and newborn care, prescription drugs and wellness and chronic disease management services.
If you would like to enroll in New York State of Health, make sure you enroll by December 15 to ensure coverage from the first day of 2019.
Find a Plan that Works for You and Your Family
Additionally, there are also qualified plans available to New York State residents. Coming in the form of four tiers (platinum, gold, silver and bronze), all qualified health plans in the Marketplace cover a variety of patient care services, including doctors’ visits, hospital stays, emergency care, maternity and newborn care, laboratory services and chronic disease management, among other services. Based on your income and individual healthcare needs, you can pick a plan that’s best for you.
Open enrollment takes place November 1, 2018 through January 30, 2019, which is the only period of time of year in which you can enroll in a plan. After this period, you must have a qualifying life event to be eligible for a plan through the Exchange; a list of qualifying life events can be found here. Note that voluntarily dropping other health coverage; being terminated by not paying your premiums; or losing coverage that is not considered minimum essential coverage, does not constitute as qualifying life events. Also, if you are under 26 years old and on your parent’s health insurance plan, you must enroll in your own plan by your 26th birthday.
